Upland Unified School District
Collective Commitments that Guide Our Professional Learning Communities
Part 1: Learning is Our Fundamental Purpose |
We acknowledge that the fundamental purpose of our school is to ensure that “all students will acquire and apply knowledge at high levels.” Therefore, collectively and as individuals, we are committed to examine our practices in light of their impact on learning. The priorities for our shared work will include:
- Building collective knowledge regarding the Common Core State Standards to clarify what all students must know and be able to do as a result of each unit of instruction.
- Developing and administering frequent team-developed common formative assessments to monitor the learning of each student on all essential outcomes.
- Dedicating and structuring time to implement intervention/extension initiatives during the course of the regular instruction, school day, and academic year.
- Providing mandatory interventions for students to ensure that each student receives additional time and support for learning until he or she has met the agreed-upon standards. Intervention efforts will be monitored and adjusted using a regular cycle of data analysis.

Part 2: Building a Collaborative Culture Through High-Performing Teams |
We are committed to work together to achieve our collective purpose, ensuring that “all students will acquire and apply knowledge at high levels.” We will cultivate a collaborative culture through the development of high-performing school and district teams by:
- Providing, monitoring and maximizing the implementation of collaborative team time during the contractual professional day and year.
- Analyzing student data to determine appropriate intervention and to make curricular adjustments that improve student learning.
- Developing course outlines, pacing, grading, and common formative assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
- Identifying and achieving common SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Framed) goals as part of the school planning process.
|
Part 3: A Focus on Results |
We assess our effectiveness on the basis of results rather than intentions. Individuals, teams, and schools will seek relevant data and information and use that information to promote continuous improvement. The priorities for our shared work will include the following:
- Administering and analyzing data from common formative assessments to identify students who need additional time and support for learning, identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching, and measure team progress toward SMART goals.
- Acting on the information from student data, using research-based instructional practices, to ensure that all students “acquire and apply knowledge at high levels” as we close all achievement gaps.
